Norway, land of the farmer

This picture is taken in Vauldalen, just a few km from the Swedish border. There you can find well-cared for and seemingly thriving farms all the way up to the tree-limit. Norway holds in high esteem that the countryside should be viable and gives support for small farming. How far will I have to walk on the Swedish side before I find a similar farm? 200 km? 300 km?

Despite the fact that 42% of EU:s budget is allocated to farming and rural development there are no corresponding farms on the Swedish side of the border. It makes a big difference in the landscape you walk through. Animals and people can survive here in spite of harsh conditions. And the landscape is kept open and alive. It creates a beauty and balance in both the geography of the landscape and the demography of the nation.

One of many small farms is Kirkvollen in Tydal. The farm has passed from father to son since the beginning of the eighteenhundreds. Ingebrikt Kirkvold runs the ecological farm and Hilde is working in the environmental office of the small commune (800 inhabitants), but on the side she is renting out one of the houses on the farm for pilgrims, as the farm is right on the pilgrim path. Den här bilden är tagen i Vauldalen, bara någon km in på norska sidan om gränsen. Där kan man hitta välhållna och till synes välmående bondgårdar hela vägen upp mot trädgränsen. Norge håller högt att hela landet och hela landsbygden ska leva och ger stöd till småbrukare. Hur långt behöver jag vandra på svenska sidan för att hitta en liknande gård? 200 km? 300 km?

Trots att 42% av EU:s budget går till jordbruk och landsbygdsutveckling så finns det inga motsvarande jordbruk på svenska sidan gränsen. Det gör en väldig skillnad i landskapet man vandrar igenom. Djur och människor kan överleva här trots karga förhållanden. Och landskapet hålls levande och öppet. Det skapar en skönhet och balans både i landskapets geografi och i nationens demografi.

Ett av många småbruken är Kirkvollen i Tydal. Gården har gått från far till son sen början av 1800-talet. Ingebrikt Kirkvold driver ett ekologiskt småbruk, Hilde är miljöansvarig i den lilla kommunen (800 invånare) men vid sidan om hyr hon ut ett av husen på gården som ligger alldeles invid pilgrimsleden. Det går nog knappt en dag utan att jag tänker i tacksamhet på dig, Åke. Alla minnen som vi delat under årens lopp blir man ju ständigt påmind om genom gamla sånger och sammanhang, människor och miljöer som poppar upp litet här och där, litet nu och då. The unfolding tale of a hundred hymns

Wow! The power of setting your intentions... Last summer I created a folder in my computer, and I had to give it a name. After giving it a quick thought I wrote: "Hundred hymns", in an attempt to be a bit poetic in the small space and time given. There's a new hymnbook on its way in Sweden and a call has gone out for anyone who wants to contribute with proposals. I thought I ought to send in something before the deadline on New Years and the folder was created for this purpose. I started to browse thru a life's worth of song creation and did not find much suitable, managed to come up with about 30 songs that I thought could work, after editing them quite substantially. After that I fell ill in Covid. Little did I realise then how necessary this was for the developments that were to follow. For the first time in my life I had a personal and very tangible experience of life's brevity. And a reminder of the importance of taking every day as a precious gift. N

Never Ending Peace And Love – Reflections on a first encounter with NEPAL
